Harvest Season Poses Biggest Fire Threat for Farmers
By Mark Askelson (10/11/17)
Hillsboro, ND -- The harvest season for farmers is hands down their busiest time of the year. Farmers run from field to field, working night and day to get their crop out of the ground and to market or storage. But it’s also the most dangerous time of year and poses the biggest threat for a fire to occur. Hillsboro Fire Chief Jamie Reed says without a doubt, the combine faces some of the biggest fire hazards if not maintained and cleaned.
But just having a fire extinguisher isn’t enough. Gary Fire Chief Buck Engen says you need to make sure your fire extinguisher is in good working order.
If you need to use a fire extinguisher, the simplest recommended technique is the “PASS” technique. Pull the pin, Aim the hose nozzle low toward the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent, and Sweep the nozzle from side to side at the base of the flame until the fire is out.
