Many Great Area Walleye Fishing Opportunities for the MN Walleye Opener

Detroit Lakes, MN -- With well over 10,000 lakes across the State of Minnesota, which one should you fish for this weekend’s Walleye opener? You could head north a few hours to a few proven walleye destinations like Lake of the Woods or Upper Red Lake, or even down to Mille Lacs, that is if you’re ok with only keeping one walleye. But there are a few hot spots closer to home. Nathan Olson, Detroit Lakes Area Fisheries Supervisor, has a pretty good feel for the best walleye lakes in our region. Olson says depending on which direction you travel, there are plenty of great options.
And Olson says there’s also a sleeper lake that’s significantly closer to home for most. He notes that Tilde Lake, or Stocky lake as its more commonly known, between Ulen and Hitterdal could be putting out some good numbers of walleyes this weekend.
Regardless of where you choose to go fishing, Olson highly recommends making sure everything on your boat is ready before you decide to launch it this weekend.
More than half a million anglers are expected to take part in this weekend’s walleye opener. Governor Tim Walz will be hosting the annual Governor’s Opener event this year in Albert Lea.
