Hillsboro, ND -- This week is National Fire Prevention Week and the theme is “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere,” which works to educate people about three basic but essential steps to take to reduce the likelihood of having a fire––and how to escape safely in the event of one. Hillsboro Fire Chief Jamie Reed encourages you to LOOK around your home and identify potential fire hazards.

The “listen” part of the theme relates to listening for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. But in order to hear it, Reed says you need to make sure your smoke alarms are in good working order.

And Reed says families should “Learn” two ways out of every room and have a plan in place for when a fire happens.

Its also important to make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.
